Light: C.S. Lewis’s First and Final Short Story (Dr. Charlie Starr)

Light (Lewis Final Short Story)This book interview is from 2012, but it had not yet been featured here since changing the podcast audio hosting. It is a conversation with Dr. Charlie W. Starr and his book Light: C.S. Lewis’s First and Final Short Story. It tells the story of how a manuscript surfaced that appeared to be a different version of a short story called “The Man Born Blind.” The book reveals the results of his investigation and includes several interpretations of “Light.” The interview was recorded at the 2012 C.S. Lewis Colloquium at Taylor University.

17r Essay Chat – Horrid Red Things (Dr. Charlie Starr)

EC17r - Horrid Red ThingsAfter beginning an occasional series examining a single essay from Lewis in 2012 and doing more than a dozen that year, I ended up doing a lot fewer since that time. The following discussion with Dr. Charlie Starr was first released in April, 2013. It’s on the essay “Horrid Red Things.” The hope is that by listening to this essay chat you will want to read or re-read it. “Horrid Red Things” can be most easily found in a collection called God in the Dock. Charlie has been on several other shows since this essay chat. Be sure to check the links below to hear the other programs.

The Heart of Light (Dr. Charlie Starr)

The Heart of LightI’m sharing an interview from respected C.S. Lewis scholar Dr. Charlie Starr, but it’s not directly about Lewis. However, Charlie does announce news about upcoming articles related to Lewis towards the end of the show. However, the main focus is on a brand new fictional book that is influenced in part by Lewis and done in the vein of his Science Fiction trilogy. The book is called The Heart of Light: A Tale of Solomon Star and it is the first of what should be many great adventures. This is also different in another way, I had Dr. Crystal Hurd, a frequent guest on All About Jack conduct the interview. As you may remember she actually did another interview for me in 2013. It was a brief visit with Dr. Malcolm Guite.

Charlie Starr’s Lewis Pages

 CharlieStarr Website

Dr. Charlie W. Starr has published several scholarly and popular articles on C. S. Lewis, especially on Lewis and film. His personal website has a section devoted to Lewis that you will want to check out. A large variety of articles he has written over the years are available in his “Charlie’s Lewis Essays” subsection. Among the articles is a very insightful piece called “C.S. Lewis’s Vision of Heaven” that was first published in CSL: The Bulletin of the New York C.S. Lewis Society. His “Chronicles of Narnia” area includes all the maps on Narnia in one place for easy reference. There are several other subsections in Charlie’s site to explore as well.

Another major item to not miss related to Dr. Starr is a book he had published a couple of years ago entitled Light: C. S. Lewis’s First and Final Short StoryIt tells about one of Lewis’s short stories that he first work before becoming a Christian and a revised version done many years after coming to the faith that was never published…until it became available in Light. Dr. Starr provides insight into several of Lewis’s other works as he explores the possible meanings to the story.
