Live Like a Narnian (Joe Rigney) 2016r

Live-Like-a-Narnian.jpgHere’s an interview first released in 2013, but not shared again since my podcast hosting changed. It’s a book interview about Live Like a Narnian, a title from Joe Rigney. The subject obviously deals with Narnia, but it looks at it from the standpoint of Christian discipleship. Joe is from Bethlehem College and Seminary and was one of the speakers at the recent Desiring God conference on C.S. Lewis. This is essentially the same recording from three years ago so there isn’t a mention of my book about The Screwtape Letters, so be sure to follow the link below to learn more!

Joy and Poetic Imagination (Dr. Stephen Thorson)

Joy and Poetic ImaginationBefore Lewis embraced the Christian faith he had a lengthy debate with one of his friends, Owen Barfield about what would be considered involving subtle metaphysical and philosophical distinctions.  It became know as the “Great War.” These disagreements impacted Lewis a lot, but this topic isn’t often explored with much detail in biographies.  Joy and Poetic Imagination: Understanding C. S. Lewis’s “Great War” with Owen Barfield and its Significance for Lewis’s Conversion and Writings is a book by Dr. Stephen Thorson that examines the issue thoroughly. The following podcast is a brief interview with Stephen as well as a short talk he gave at the 2016 Taylor Colloquium.

Testing the Possibilities of the Screwtape-Ransom Speculative Universe (Brenton Dickieson)

Screwtape Haunts Eden (Brenton Taylor 2016)Here’s another short talk presented at the 2016 Colloquium at Taylor University. This one is from Brenton Dickieson, best known for his website A Pilgrim in Narnia. The full title of his paper was “When Screwtape Haunts in Eden: Testing the Possibilities of the Screwtape-Ransom Speculative Universe.” A key part of what he shares is about how The Screwtape Letters may actually fit into the “Ransom fictional universe.” Brenton has been on my podcast, All About Jack several times before (see links below).

Battlefield of the Mind: Examining Screwtape’s Preferred Method (William O’Flaherty)

Battle of the Mind (William Taylor 2016)I just gave the following short talk on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Taylor University Colloquium. My brief presentation was part of a variety of academic papers that was presented  there. In it I explore the 13th through the 17th letters from The Screwtape Letters to reveal where an often overlooked “preferred method” of the devils is suggested. Previously I spoke on the initial twelve letters (see link below) when I gave a keynote address at the Inklings Fellowship Weekend Retreat at Montreat College. The material from both is adapted and an expansion of material from my first book, C.S. Lewis Goes to Hell: A Companion and Study Guide to The Screwtape Letters. While I do give a summary of the unique aspects of my book, the main focus of the talk is about the devils’ “preferred method” to keep us from living up to God’s potential. Visit my website to contact me about giving this talk or a three or four part presentation on all of the places this method is mentioned or alluded to.

17r Essay Chat – Horrid Red Things (Dr. Charlie Starr)

EC17r - Horrid Red ThingsAfter beginning an occasional series examining a single essay from Lewis in 2012 and doing more than a dozen that year, I ended up doing a lot fewer since that time. The following discussion with Dr. Charlie Starr was first released in April, 2013. It’s on the essay “Horrid Red Things.” The hope is that by listening to this essay chat you will want to read or re-read it. “Horrid Red Things” can be most easily found in a collection called God in the Dock. Charlie has been on several other shows since this essay chat. Be sure to check the links below to hear the other programs.

Shining Light on Screwtape’s Darkest Secret (William O’Flaherty)

Screwtape's Darkest SecretI just gave the following talk on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Inklings Fellowship Weekend Retreat that was held in Montreat, NC at Montreat College. It was also the public debut of my first book C.S. Lewis Goes to Hell: A Companion and Study Guide to The Screwtape Letters. While I do give a summary of the unique aspects of my book, the main focus of the talk is about the devils’ secret weapon that is mentioned in nearly all of the letters. My book just list them, but this presentation provides more details and gives a practical application to one’s life. Visit my website to contact me about giving this talk or a three or four part presentation on all of the places this weapon is mentioned or alluded to.
